SUMMARY:Joel Harrison Quartet featuring Don Byron
DESCRIPTION:Joel Harrison – guitar \nDon Byron – woodwinds \nGary Versace – keyboard \nJeff Siegel – drums \nGuitarist\, composer\, arranger\, lyricist\, writer\, educator\, and vocalist Joel Harrison has “created a new blueprint for jazz” (New Orleans Times-Picayune). Harrison is a two-time winner of the Jazz Composers Alliance Composition Competition and has appeared repeatedly on DownBeat Magazine’s “Rising Star” poll.\nHis twenty-two releases as a leader showcase his prowess as a shapeshifting composer whose music may be founded on jazz but veers into classical\, rock\, country\, and all manner of American roots music. Succinctly described by the New York Times as “protean… brilliant.” \nFor well over a decade\, Don Byron has been a singular voice in an astounding range of musical contexts\, exploring widely divergent traditions while continually striving for what he calls “a sound above genre.” As clarinetist\, saxophonist\, composer\, arranger\, and social critic\, he redefines every genre of music he plays\, be it classical\, salsa\, hip-hop\, funk\, rhythm & blues\, klezmer\, or any jazz style from swing and bop to cutting-edge downtown improvisation. He has been consistently voted best clarinetist by critics and readers alike in leading international music journals since being named “Jazz Artist of the Year” by Down Beat in 1992. Acclaimed as much for his restless creativity as for his unsurpassed virtuosity as a player\, Byron has presented a multitude of projects at major music festivals around the world. \nKeyboardist Gary Versace was able to rise to the top of the contemporary jazz scene in scant few years\, yet the journey to prominence was hard fought and deservedly won\nSince moving to New York City in 2002. In the ensuing years\, Versace has become one of the most prominent\, in-demand organ players in contemporary jazz\, working with the Grammy-award winning big band of Maria Schneider\, and the Nuttree Quartet with Jerry Bergonzi. The small ensembles he has worked with include fellow keyboardists Andy LaVerne and Frank Kimbrough\, as well as John Scofield\, John Abercrombie\, Adam Nussbaum\, Eliot Zigmund\, Lee Konitz\, Dick Oatts\, Seamus Blake\, John Hollenbeck\, Tim Ries\, Donny McCaslin\, Rich Perry\, Jonathan Kreisberg\, Adam Rogers\, Tom Guarna\, John Ellis\, Scott Wendholt\, Steve LaSpina\, Loren Stillman\, Jason Marsalis\, Joey Baron\, Tom Rainey\, Tony Reedus\, Clarence Penn\, Danny Gottlieb\, Matt Perrine\, Drew Gress\, Brad Shepik\, Peter Bernstein\, Ingrid Jensen\, and Joe Magnarelli.Versace earned three consecutive placings as a Rising Star in the Down Beat Magazine Critics Poll from 2006-2008. \nDrummer/Composer Jeff “Siege” Siegel is a veteran of the New York Jazz scene and has worked with a virtual “who’s who” of artists. A member of the Sir Roland Hanna Trio from 1994-’99\, Siegel’s diverse career has also led him to perform and/or record with legends such as Ron Carter\, Kenny Burrell\, Jack DeJohnette\, Benny Golson\, Sheila Jordan\, Helen Merrill\, Mose Allison\, John Medeski\, Arthur Rhames\, Dave Douglas\, Stefon Harris\, Pat Metheny\, Kurt Elling\, Ravi Coltrane\, Ryan Kisor\, Lee Shaw\, Levin Brothers\, John Medeski\, Dena DeRose\, Lee Shaw and many others. He has worked in the avant garde world as well with Wadada Leo Smith\, Baikida Carroll. He’s performed over 30 European tours including four as leader of the Jeff “Siege” Siegel Quartet and several others as co-leader. The Jeff “Siege” Siegel Sextet performed a 3 week tour of Africa in the summer of 2019. Other recent tours include The Levin Brothers Japan\, Mexico\, Canada and the US west coast and Midwest as well as South & Central America. His 2017 CD release “King of Xhosa” features South African trumpeter Feya Faku and is on the ARC label. SUMMARY:Mazzella/Leibowitz/Goetz
DESCRIPTION:Emily Mazzella – vocals \nLonnie Leibowitz – keys \nMike Goetz – bass \nEmily Mazzella is a 21 year old\, up and coming jazz singer on the scene. Her story with jazz is one that grows deeper in passion every day. She began music at a very young age; participating in various shows\, musicals\, and choirs- her first profound musical performance being through an honor choir which was showcased in the renown Carnegie Hall. \nEmily’s love for music had only blossomed from that point on\, where she then began to hone her craft in a serious fashion. Coming from R & B\, Pop\, and all various roots: Emily began to study voice with Jazz Pianist\, Composer\, and Vocal Coach Lonnie Leibowitz\, around the later months of her junior year of high school\, leading to her first professional gig as the featured singer\, with Lonnie’s trio at the Putnam County 4H Fair that summer. Getting deeper into jazz\, opening her heart space\, she became aware to all its cosmic properties. She continued to dive deep into the artistry throughout high school. Committing to “note to note feeling” (absorbed through the Masters)\, whether a melody or scat\, Emily always delivers a “pure soul expression\, with intensity\, as she communicates to her audience”- Lonnie Leibowitz. She has shared her unique message performing at various gigs\, most notably in her recent performance with the Birdland Big Band at Birdland Jazz Club in Manhattan\, and other NYC clubs. She has also shared the stage alongside Josh Groban during his Harmony Tour Performance at the Jones Beach Theater. Emily continues to work many local gig circuits\, now expanding outward to the nation via radio air-play\, interviews\, blogs\, and most importantly live performance.\nFall of 2020\, brought her first professional release\, an E.P. entitled “Freedom of the Note”. The E.P. was a powerful\, transformational\, and profound moment in Emily’s career in terms of communicating songs of the Great American Songbook in original\, soulful ways. Two years later\, in 2022\, (at Scott Petito’s NRS Recording) and now being released in 2023\, Emily is overflowing with gratitude to release her first full length recording\, entitled “Awakening” (Solar Dream Records). Produced by Lonnie Leibowitz\, who plays piano and guitar on the record\, it also features the musical mastery of Michael Goetz on bass\, Jason Anderson on drums\, and Kazi Oliver on percussion. The inspired album appreciates\, elevates\, and communicates pure soul expression of the jazz language\, (and its inherent spiritual totems). “Awakening”\, and her live performances\, have been capturing the ears and hearts of writers\, critics\, musicians\, alike. Some moving words about the album are from that of the icon known as Jazz Vocalist Sheila Jordan… “Emily is a beautiful singer. It’s a joy to know that we have beautiful\, young\, and talented singers keeping’ this incredible music alive…”- Sheila Jordan\, Jazz Vocalist

SUMMARY:Mark Usvolk Sextet
DESCRIPTION:Ron Horton – trumpet & flugelhorn \nTim Armacost – saxophone \nPeter Tomlinson – keyboard \nMark Dziuba – guitar \nMark Usvolk – electric bass/composer \nBram Kincheloe – drums \n  \nBassist/guitarist/composer Mark Usvolk has an unfair advantage. Since he and his wife\, Roni own Lydia’s Cafe\, he gets to play there whenever he wants and can usually entice musicians who play better than he does to play in his band.\nAfter receiving his Bachelor of Music degree (BM) from the University of North Texas many\, many years ago\, Mark went on to make a tolerable living playing guitar and teaching until he came to the realization that his chances of finding a woman who would put up with his BS and his meager income would be greatly improved if he had a real job. In the late 80’s\, Mark moved to Stone Ridge after living in Dallas and Tucson and began designing and building houses. It worked! He met and married Roni and in 2006 they bought the Country Deli from Roni’s mom\, Lydia and thus began the saga of Lydia’s Cafe\, a struggling music venue and gaping money pit which brings us to the present situation.\nMark has assembled a dream team of musicians whose sole purpose in life has been to prepare them to perform Mark’s original compositions and to provide beautiful solos over his weird chord changes. The pieces are representative of a range of styles from jazz to Latin to funk to classical and feature memorable melodies and a somewhat unique harmonic approach. \nDream Team \nSince 1982\, trumpeter Ron Horton has been an integral part of New York’s flourishing jazz scene and he stands out both as an exemplary instrumentalist and as a highly progressive composer and arranger. Whether called upon as a sideman or as a leader of one of his own ensembles\, he shows that he is committed to further expanding the existing perimeters of jazz. \nHorton has had many long musical associations with leaders such as saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom (1983-2000) and pianist Andrew Hill. He was a member of Hill’s sextet from 1998 until 2003\, and appears on the group’s critically acclaimed cd\, Dusk (Palmetto 2000). He was also musical director and co-arranger for Hill’s big band\, and is featured on the cd\, A Beautiful Day(Palmetto 2002).\nRon Horton was born in 1960 in Bethesda\, Maryland\, and has been frequently called on as a sideman to perform and/or record with such artists as Lee Konitz\, Will Holshouser\, Rez Abbasi\, Phillip Johnston\, Andy Laster\, Mick Rossi\, Matt Wilson\, Bill Gerhardt\, Bill Mays\, Peggy Stern\, Allan Chase\, Andy Biskin\, Ted Nash\, Jon Gordon\, John McKenna\, Walter Thompson\, Diana Perez\, Billy Newman\, Mario Pavone\, Tina Marsh\, Maryanne DeProphetis\, Landon Knoblock\, Sam Bardfeld\, Maria Guida\, Abigail Riccards\, Angie Sanchez\, Kris Davis\, Darcy James Argue and many others.\n_________________________ \nSaxophonist Tim Armacost’s music is known for its balance of lyrical invention\, harmonic sophistication and exciting interplay among top-tier band mates. His improvisations are brimming with ideas\, but organized into a naturally flowing narrative. His unusual life story\, which includes extended residencies in Japan\, India\, the Philippines\, Holland and New York\, informs his wide ranging musical explorations. \nTouring regularly around the world both as a sideman and a leader\, Armacost has worked with a phenomenal number of jazz greats\, including Al Foster\, Jimmy Cobb\, Kenny Barron\, Tom Harrell\, Billy Hart\, Victor Lewis\, Jeff “Tain” Watts\, Peter Erskine\, Ray Drummond\, Roy Hargrove\, Don Friedman and Randy Brecker. \nArmacost is not only known for his heat-of-the-moment playing. He also brings his storytelling skill to compositions for groups ranging from trios to big bands. He is a recipient of the prestigious Doris Duke/CMA “New Works” award. Four of his compositions were arranged by Michael Abene and Jim McNeely and recorded by Holland’s acclaimed Metropole Orchestra. Wynton Marsalis commissioned Armacost’s original composition and arrangement\, “The Repose in All Things\,” which is featured on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s recent recording Jazz and Art II. \nArmacost has recorded 14 critically acclaimed albums as a leader\, performed on more than 60 as a sideman\, and has recorded over 100 original songs and arrangements. Armacost is a widely respected educator\, teaching at the Jamey Aebersold and Stanford Summer Jazz Workshops\, at Queens College in New York City and as a clinician at Universities throughout the U.S.\, Japan and Europe. \nArmacost co-leads the New York Standards Quartet\, the Brooklyn Big Band\, and In Trio\, and is currently working on music for two new projects: a chord-less quartet featuring Gary Smulyan\, John Patitucci and Al Foster\, and a new quartet with Jim Ridl\, Ugonna Okegwo and Rudy Royston. His most recent leader outing\, Time Being\, featuring Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts and Bob Hurst received 4 stars in Downbeat magazine\, and has met with critical acclaim around the world.\n____________________\nMark Dziuba has been a guitarist\, improviser and composer for most of his life. He has performed with a who’s who of Jazz\, Blues\, Rock and Bluegrass musicians and has performed and taught at workshops and festivals internationally for over 40 years.\nMark is a tenured professor of music at the State University of New York at New Paltz where he directs the Jazz Studies program. He was a part of the internationally acclaimed National Guitar Workshop for 25 years and has been a part of the Crown of the Continent International Guitar Festival since its birth.\nMark is a published author and a featured soloist and composer on numerous recordings. He continues to explore the world of improvised live and virtual music and can be found performing often in the area and abroad.\n____________________\nPianist/composer Peter Tomlinson holds a BFA from SUNY New Paltz. The depth of her experiences and love of jazz is apparent when she brings all of her talents to bear in her live performances\, the recording studio\, and through her moving lyrics and compositions. \nPraise for Roiger’s music and performances: \nJack DeJohnette\, 2012 NEA Jazz Master and legendary jazz drummer: Teri has an intuitive laid back sense of time reminiscent of Abbey Lincoln & Betty Carter\, but with her own uniqueness. \nStanley Crouch at DIZZY’s: Her notes\, her swing\, her sound\, and the all-encompassing soulfulness of Teri giving meaning to the music and the moment said all there is to say. She had all of the essence that anyone wants to hear anytime from a true jazz singer…She is made for those who still understand the meaning of the term the real thing. \nVic Garbarini\, Playboy Magazine: A voice like the finest bittersweet chocolate full of rich\, dark\, contradicting flavors that miraculously blend to create one of the most original vocal instruments in decades! \nJAZZTIMES: Powerfully moving…sagacious warmth…impressively deep… \nALL ABOUT JAZZ: Roiger’s warm contralto\, like aged\, fine whiskey\, is smooth but heady. \nMark Myers\, JazzWax.com: A vocalist who wraps (Abbey) Lincoln’s complex songs around her finger… \n

SUMMARY:The Soul-Jazz Collective
DESCRIPTION:Steve Raleigh – Guitar \nPete Levin – Keys \nLew Scott – Bass \nMatt Garrity – Drums \n  \nSteve Raleigh & The Soul-Jazz Collective is a four-piece group specializing in upbeat groove music that’s a blend of soul\, funk\, blues\, gospel\, and jazz pioneered in the 1960s by such artists as Herbie Hancock\, Grant Green\, Jack McDuff\, Stanley Turrentine\, and Lou Donaldson. \nIn the 60s this type of music was sometimes referred to as “Funky Bop”. Jazz pianist Horace Silver stated that “Funky means earthy and blues-based. It might not be blues itself\, but it does have that ‘down-home’ feel to it. Soul is basically the same\, but there’s an added dimension of feeling and spirit.” \nHowever you choose to describe it\, our shows are fun\, engaging\, lyrical\, and guaranteed to have you tapping your foot and maybe even dancing in the aisle \nhttps://www.facebook.com/TheSoulJazzCollective \n\nhttps://youtu.be/hYE4ZigA7eY

SUMMARY:Marty Elkins & Company
DESCRIPTION:Marty Elkins – vocals \nPeter Tomlinson – keys \nLew Scott – bass \nLarry Balestra – drums \n  \n\n\nMarty Elkins was born in Jersey City\, New Jersey.  As a child she listened mostly to the soul stations in New York\, and the late night R&B shows like Jocko’s Rocket Ship.  She left there for college in Boston\, and while in college was given a copy of Ella Fitzgerald and Ellis Larkins.  She was also exposed to Charlie Parker\, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims\, and Louis Jordan\, but the life changing day was when she found a copy of Billie Holiday’s “Lady in Satin” in a local Woolworth bin in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. Literally holing up in her room with this recording\, and a Bessie Smith record she acquired\, she became devoted to jazz and began listening to it exclusively.  She had the good fortune to meet musicians in that area who played jazz such as Herb Pomeroy\, Ray Santisi\, Jimmy Mosher\, and Dave McKenna among others.  Dave McKenna had a steady gig at the Copley Plaza\, and he encouraged her to sing with him there.  She landed a gig singing with a vocal trio in Bo Winiker’s band\, floating around the Boston harbor singing Andrew Sisters songs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarty keeps you believing… Her voice has a glowing roundness\, she hit notes without strain and she swings… \n\nZan Stewart\, Downbeat Magazine (6/01) \n4 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFinding not many other opportunities to sing up there\, she moved to New York in the early eighties. Meeting more musicians in the few remaining clubs from the Fifty-Second street era – Jimmy Ryan’s and Eddie Condon’s – she began singing with Max Kaminsky’s band to enable Max to get off the bandstand and sell his book.  The Runyonesque club owner began paying her to do so\, and she began doing some gigs with Spanky Davis’ “Jimmy Ryan All Stars” at the Cat Club.  She then spent some years in “the trenches” playing various bars and restaurants in the New York area. Fortunately\, she always had the pleasure of singing with excellent musicians.  She had a steady gig at Cousin’s in Brooklyn with Tardo Hammer and Lee Hudson\, and really began to develop her style with them.  There was also a steady gig at the Savoy Lounge in midtown Manhattan\, which was with a young organ trio – Adam Scone\, Coleman Mellett and Craig Wuepper.  She was in a vocal group\, also\,  “The Sweethots”\, and with them worked with the Stan Rubin Band and the Cab Calloway Orchestra\, under the direction of Christopher Calloway Brooks. That trio did a radio show with Spanky Davis\, Clarence Hutchenrider (the clarinetist featured on the 1930’s hit record “Smoke Rings” by the Casa Loma Orchestra) and Vince Giordano. Recently she has been performing at the well-known New York jazz spots Smalls\, Mezzrow and the 55 Bar. \nOutside of New York City in the tri-state area\, Marty has been appearing at the Falcon Art Center in Marlboro\, NY with “The Saints of Swing”\, Jazz Vespers at the First Presbyterian Church of Phillipstown\, in Cold Spring\, NY\, and various small restaurants and private events with the Bob Wylde Trio.  She was invited to be part of the Jazz\, Blues and Gospel Festival at the Las Vegas Hilton in 2103 and did a tour of Germany with the Martin Sasse Trio after the release of her first CD. \nThe wonderful indie label\, Nagel-Heyer records got her international attention\, having released “Fuse Blues”\, the critically acclaimed debut and “In Another Life” – a duo effort with Dave McKenna. \n“Marty Elkins runs her own voodoo down.  It will remind you of no one else out there.  Her voice is always doing those things a jazz singer will do.  Marty Elkins is a jazz singer…”  Stanley Crouch\, liner notes on Fuse Blues (Nagel-Heyer Records) \nMarty has now established her own record label\, Elktone – which is distributed by Jazzheads. Her most-recent titles are “Walkin’ By The River”\, “Fat Daddy” (which was on two “best of 2018” lists with Cadence Magazine and Syncopated Times)\, and her newest project “‘Tis Autumn”.

SUMMARY:Matt Munisteri's Totally Awesome Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Matt Munisteri\, guitar \nJoe Barbato\, accordion and piano \nDanton Boller\, bass \nBen Perowsky\, drums \n  \nMatt Munisteri is a singer\, a songwriter\, and a nationally recognized guitarist whose wide-ranging work in the Jazz and American Roots idioms has put this native New Yorker on the road in the US and around the world for the past two decades. Whether swinging out on songs both funny and poignant with his own bands; testing his chops with virtuosos like violinist Mark O’Connor; lighting up recordings by singer-songwriters like Loudon Wainwright or Kat Edmonson; or delving into deep cuts from the American songbook with iconic jazz singers like “Little” Jimmy Scott and Catherine Russell\, Munisteri is always dazzling and funky\, bluesy and rhapsodic\, and reliably beyond category. \n“One of New York’s top vintage guitar stylists” – Downbeat Magazine \n“A present-day ironist with a pre-war heart” – The New Yorker \n“Jazz musicians aren’t supposed to write lyrics that good…bands like this are why you move to New York” – The Village Voice \n“recalls a time when instrumental virtuosity\, harmonic sophistication\, bucolic storysongs\, and a straightforward emotional delivery were not mutually exclusive” – Acoustic Guitar Magazine \nwww.mattmunisteri.com
